Brian D. York is a Chicago-based composer whose work bridges the depth of contemporary concert music with dynamic scoring for film, media, and collaborative projects. Grounded in the Western classical tradition, his concert compositions blend influences from Impressionism, neo-classicism, musical nationalism, and atonality, drawing inspiration from figures like Dvořák, Ravel, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Copland, and George Crumb. His concert catalog explores innovative harmonic languages and rhythmic complexity over strong melodic foundations, writing for diverse instrumentation including classical guitar, piano, choir, and chamber ensembles

A graduate of Belmont University’s music program in Nashville, where he studied composition with Dr. Paul Godwin, he completed advanced training in orchestral composition for media through ThinkSpace Education, and continued private study with Dr. Xavier Beteta.

His concert works and commissions have earned international reach, including (Pentatonic) Postcards, performed by the Louisville Guitar Orchestra; Song of God, commissioned and premiered by the Cantores Community Choir; and The Passing, performed at Bled Contemporary Music Week in Slovenia following a year-long composer residency.

Alongside his concert catalog, Brian is an accomplished media and cross-genre composer. His scoring credits span short films, video games, and feature projects, including the feature-length documentary Ocean City Beach Patrol. Whether writing for the concert hall, the screen, or interactive media, Brian crafts immersive musical experiences driven by dramatic depth and structural rigor.
